Retro, Vintage, Old School, Mid-Century Modern... whatever you call old has become new again and hot in fashion, home design and now hair... specifically prom hair.
This makes sense to us iCafe Girl Moderne Divas... arm deep in the thick of everything prom leading up to this "One Night Only" event. You can't tell me, the glamorous ponytail above doesn't remind you of our girl Barbie. She's over 50 but still awesome!
Since we're talking ponytails, here's a few more glam ponytails for your prom night consideration.
This ponytail Reese Witherspoon sported at the 2011 Oscars looks like it was taken right off of Barbie's head. Cute!
Oh yeah... for our 2011 prom season, the up-do has taken a back seat to the fifties and sixties ponytail, but with a New Millennium twist.
If Barbie isn't exactly your style and you want an edgier look, try this latest trend in ponytail chic: "the messy ponytail," straight off the fashion catwalk... very America's Next Top Model.
And Divas, if you still haven't decided to take the prom plunge because you don't have a fun-worthy date. I have one question for you? Aren't you fun all by yourself? If your school allows it, go solo especially if you know other kids breaking the tradition strings.

Me and Tori picked vintage gowns for our senior proms... and we're staying with the retro vibe for our do.' Let me change that, our gowns sort of picked us. But they work. We'll show you a prom gown/dress similar to what we're wearing, but not "the" dress.

Go on and say it, Jo. We don't want anybody copying our dresses. We're not discovering a twin that night. You're up, girl.

Right, like some girl will find our inherited vintage gowns. I'm okay if she's wearing a replica, as long as it's in a different color and material. My Aunt Diane first wore my gown in the seventies when she competed in the Teen Hemisphere Pageant at my age. It's inspired by the 1940s Hollywood Glam era, and similar to the one below. But mine has more detailing... and it's in a different color... very Dorothy Dandridge.

I'm thinking Mary Tyler Moore Seventies flip. My mom and Nana loved that show. The flip's heyday was in the fifties and sixties... but started dying out in the seventies, until Mary Richards made it chic again. A lot of the Motown girl singing groups wore a version of the flip. It's making a strong comeback again, but with a modern girl's twist.
Today's flip has First Lady Michelle Obama's layers and less upturn...
Supermodel and Philanthopist Liya Kebede's blunt ends...
Actress Katie Holme's wispy chin length... or longer with spiraled ends, you'll see in a sec.

Speaking of girl groups, I'm digging the Supremes flips and bobs. That's it... I'm going with Mary Wilson's long bob. I'll have the bangs swept back like hers, but with a blinged out headband.

My turn! I'm wearing my Nana Johnson's fifties lace cocktail dress. It stops mid leg and has an off-the-shoulder portrait neckline and the same peek-a-boo blush lining. But what am I going to do with my hair?

I'd so wear that dress. Check out the forties style Kourtney Kardashian is wearing. You'd turn heads for sure. You're so doing it.

Will you slow your roll please. Can I take it in, first. It's really cute and it's definitely vintage. I love it! I've got a little confession. I'm actually deciding on two of Nana Johnson's cocktail dresses. This one's less formal, but still awesome. Don't give me that look, I can't help it grandmom was a fashionista and a diva.

In recent years, the up-sweep prom hair styles have taken a back seat to the half up/half down, low and side buns, hair rolls, loose french braiding and twists.
Head-turning waves have also made a prom comeback.

They can try and copy, but they won't have my fabulosity. I'm not scared. Gabrielle Union's sassy side ponytail is so me, but I won't hear the end of it from Mama Maria if I don't show off my natural curls.
